An heretic fell into the condition of relapso when he or she relapsed into error after a first condemnation and/or abiura (even if secret). In such cases, the inquisitorial tribunal generally imposed the death penalty to be carried out by fire (if the condemned showed repentance, as a sign of clemency he was not burned alive but beheaded, followed by the burning of the corpse). Nonetheless, there are not infrequent cases of relapsi sentenced to service on the galere or to perpetual imprisonment.
