General Council of the Portuguese Inquisition

The body of counsellors of the Inquisitor General of Portugal existed from the very beginning of Portuguese Inquisition in 1536. However, for the first three decades this body, called sometimes ''Consulta da Fe'' ("Council of Faith") was largely amorphous. First early modern Portuguese historians of the Inquisition (Antonio de Sousa, Pedro Monteiro) identified only nine counsellors appointed on regular basis, but at least fourteen others seem to have been appointed as its members ad hoc for some specific task. Some of them, while acting as counsellors, continued to act as inquisitors or deputies of local tribunals. It was only in 1569 when General Council of Inquisition in Portugal was officially created by Inquisitor General Cardinal Henrique de Aviz. One year later Cardinal issued ''Regimento'' that concerned specifically the rules of the General Council.

General Council consisted three to six members at one time, apart from Inquisitor General. Between 1569 and 1821 one hundred and twenty six ecclesiastics became members of the General Council of Portuguese Inquisition (only dates of appointments are given).
